Purification Sampai (Ô-harai prayer)

Ō-HARAI (大祓い)

On the 31st of December, we chant the Kamigoto (Divine Words) in order to purify our spirit, which has been clouded by our daily lives.

The Kamigoto chant comes from a special tradition, where a request is made to the Divine to intervene in order to purify all our major indiscretions from the past, and calls on the Divine to come in and dissipate the spiritual negativity, which in turn is carried by the wind, rivers, and oceans, until it is finally pushed into the underworld, where it is purified and transformed, purifying our souls.

In the final verses of the Kamigoto, both the Divine and Meishusama are called upon to cleanse the chanters’ body, mind, and spirit of the world’s negativity. This allows the chanter to be protect and blessed with happiness and profound spiritual growth.

It is our hope that you can join us for this special prayer ceremony. We suggest that on this day that you attend the Evening Sampai of Gratitude at 6pm and chant the Kamigoto guided by one of our staff members.
